BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir speaks at a discussion organised commemorating the Historic Farakka Long March Day of Moulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani at Abdus Salam Hall of Jatiya Press Club in the capital on Thursday (May 16).

A big neighbouring country has been trying to control Bangladesh since the birth of the country in 1971, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged.

He made the remark while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion organised commemorating the Historic Farakka Long March Day of Moulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani at Abdus Salam Hall of Jatiya Press Club in the capital on Thursday (May 16).
Bhasani Onushari Parishad organised the discussion.

Mirza Fakhrul alleged that the current government led by Sheikh Hasina had completely become a "subservient" government. Many political parties are struggling for restoring democracy in the country being united on one platform, and many of them also died. More than 6 million opposition BNP leaders and workers have been sued. Repression and torture are still going on them. They are being sent to prisons on different terms of punishment.

According to the BNP Secretary General, the government has resorted to repression and torture on the opposition political activists to protect the "interest of their masters." Awami League has cling to power through a general election as per their choice being afraid of defeat or annihilation.

He said, "We have no alternative but to get united irrespective of political opinions. We will surely win if all the democratic forces get united. No force will be able to stop us to achieve our goals."

Fakhrul also said the government's only duty become accumulating wealth and safeguarding the interest of other countries. "So, we will have to realise our demands being united. None will come from abroad to do that job."

Speaking at the discussion, Jatiya Party (Zafar) Chairman Mostofa Jamal Haider observed that the country is facing serious disaster now. The International Farakka Day carries a great significance. The entire North Bengal has turned into a desert due to Farakka problem.

With Bhasani Onushari Parishad convener Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu in the chair, the discussion was also participated by Rastra Sangskar Andolon's Chief Coordinator Advocate Hasnat Qayyum, Biplobi Workers Party's General Secretary Saiful Huque, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD-Rab) Vice-President Tania Rab, Ganasanghati Andolon's Chief Coordinator Jonayed Saki, Bhasani Onushari Parishad's Member Secretary Dr Abu Yusuf Selim, Dhaka University professor Dr Asif Nazrul, and economist Prof Dr Mahbub Ullah.
