Lightning strike claims 2 lives in Gaibandha

Two people died and two others were injured reportedly after being struck by thunderbolts at Saghata and Sadar upazilas of Gaibandha district on Wednesday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Phul Mia, 33, son of Shamser Ali, a resident of  Mistripara area under Ramchandrapur union of the Sadar upazila, and Shipon Mia, 18, son of Mokhles Mia, of Beltoil village under Saghata upazila.
In Sadar upazila, a streak of lightning struck Phul Mia when he along with his father and brother were working in a paddy field, leaving Phul Mia dead on the spot and two of them critically injured.

Confirming the matter, a member of Ramchandrapur Union Parishad Abdus Samad Mia said the injured were rescued and taken to Gaibandha Sadar Hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, Shipon Mia was critically injured after being struck a thunderbolt while he was working in a paddy field, said Shefali Begum, panel chairman of Muktinagar Union Parishad.

He was rescued but succumbed to his injuries on the way to a nearby hospital, she added.
