EC scraps candidacy of State Minister Rumana Ali Tusi's brother

The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday cancelled the candidacy of Gazipur's Shreepur upazila parishad chairman candidate Md Jamil Hasan Durjoy for violating the electoral code of conduct.

The commission took the decision after a hearing held in the conference room of the Chief Election Commissioner of the Commission Secretariat on Wednesday afternoon.
Md Jamil Hasan Durjoy, son of the deceased Awami League leader and former state minister advocate Rahmat Ali and the elder brother of incumbent Primary and Mass Education State Minister Rumana Ali Tusi, was summoned by the EC to clarify his involvement in the electoral code violations.

He appeared before the commission and explained, but the commission was not satisfied, EC's Additional Secretary Ashok Kumar Debnath told reporters.

According to the summons, Jamil Hasan Durjoy has been accused of violating the electoral code of conduct on multiple occasions. Despite warnings and penalties for previous violations, he continued to engage in unauthorised activities, including organising rallies and gatherings without permission, thereby disrupting the electoral process.

The violations, which occurred on 21 April, 27 April, and 7 May, involved large gatherings of supporters and the organisation of events without proper authorisation.

Consequently, Jamil Hasan Durjoy has been fined Tk50,000 under sections 7(Kha), 7(Ga) and 17(Kha) of the upazila parishad (election conduct) regulations 2016.

On the other hand, Barishal-6 constituency's Member of the Parliament (MP) Abdul Hafiiz Mollik came to the EC and apologised for casting vote openly in the upazila parishad elections on May 8.

The EC Additional Secretary said the MP apologised unconditionally in the hearing of the commission and then the EC acquitted him of the charges.
