The Motor Vehicle Speed Limit Guideline-2024 will reduce accidents and premature deaths on roads, said Road Safety Coalition Bangladesh.

The coalition informed this at a press conference held at National Press Club in the capital on Wednesday.

Ilias Kanchan, chairman of Nirapad Sarak Chai (We Demand Safe Road), read out a written statement of the coalition at the conference.

Ilias Kanchan, in the statement, said on May 5, the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges has issued a comprehensive guideline titled ‘Motor Vehicle Speed Limit Guideline-2024’ providing that drivers of different types of vehicles will have to follow different speed limits while driving on expressways, highways and roads insides the city corporation areas and other places.

He said setting the speed limit of motorcycles in cities and villages will reduce unexpected accidents.

He said speeding and reckless driving are considered major reasons behind road crashes, but there had been no guideline for speed limits on highways and roads.

The coalition, taking the experiences from different countries on road safety, has been demanding for long time for the government guideline on speed limit of motor vehicles.

The coalition believes that if the guideline of the speed limit of vehicles is implemented in Bangladesh, preventable road crashes as well as carbon emission and premature deaths will be reduced. Besides, it will also ensure the safety of women, children and elderly people on roads.

Ilias Kanchan on behalf of the coalition thanked the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges and others who are related for the formulation of the ‘Motor Vehicle Speed Limit Guidelines 2024’.

Representatives of the coalition members Nirapad Sarak Chai (Nischa), BRAC, Dhaka Ahsania Mission, Bangladesh Red Cresent Society, National Heart Foundation, Bangladesh Orthopedic Society, Dhaka International University, and Shastho Shurokkha were present.
