HC hears NBRs drive in BRAC Bank to collect tax evaders names

A single bench of the High Court Division sat on May Day on Wednesday to hear the matter of drive conducted by National Board of Revenue (NBR) on April 30 to collect evaded taxes by account holder in BRAC Banks Gulshan-1 branch.
 
The bench of Justice Syed Refat Ahmed held court on May Day after taking permission from the Chief Justice to hear an application moved by the lawyers of BRAC Bank and two other companies.

Legal Advisor of BRAC Bank Rashid Ahmed, submitted that there is a case between Ulka Games and Indian company Moonfrog regarding their money in the bank.  After hearing the petition, the bench banned all transaction from the account till Sunday.

At the hearing, Advocate Minhajul Haque Chowdhury, BRAC Banks lawyer, submitted  that even though a case was pending in the court between Ulka Games and Indian company Moonfrog regarding the money in the bank, a 14-member team of NBR carried out night raid without giving any notice.
 
He submitted that the team intimidated and threatened BRAC Bank officials. BRAC officials were detained till 12 midnight on Tuesday.

He also submitted that there is a frozen account in the name of Ulka Games Limited in Gulshan branch of BRAC Bank.

The bench stopped all transactions from the account of Ulka Games Limited in the Gulshan branch of BRAC Bank till next Sunday. The bench will hear the matter on May 5 on whether or not the NBR will get this money.

On Tuesday night, NBR conducted a drive by special team to recover Tk 50 crore in evaded  taxes from BRAC Bank.

A team of 14 members led by two deputy commissioners of Tax Zone-15 had begun  the 13-hour drive at Gulshan-1 branch of BRAC Bank at 11:00am on Tuesday.

The operation, approved by the NBR Chairman, ended at 12:30am on Tuesday. However, the Gulshan branch of the bank declined to release the funds, citing an ongoing court case.
