Houses, cattle, poultry and cash of a day laborer were burnt down in a fire broke out in Pabna's Santhia upazila on Saturday.
The incident took place in the house of Abdus Salam, son of Kiam Uddin, at Joragachha village under Nandanpur union of the upazila just before Iftar.
Local residents and members of the house said that the fire originated from the stove in the kitchen. Instantly, the flames spread to the houses of Abdus Salam, and his sons. Then it was brought under control by the efforts of local residents and a unit of Santhia Fire Service. At that time, Tk 1.3 lakh 30 in cash, three tin houses and a kitchen, two goats and chickens were burnt. Two cows were taken to another place with the help of locals.
As the affected family has no other house to live in, they are currently living under the open sky. The owner of the house claimed that the fire caused a loss of around Tk seven lakh.
Naim Hossain, the son of the house owner Abdus Salam, said, "The money collected as loan from a local private development organization (NGO) for purchase cows was burnt in the fire. We were already poor, then the fire made us destitute.''
Santhia Fire Service Station Officer Arghya Debnath confirmed it.
