Youth electrocuted being chased by wild elephants in Sherpur

A youth died of electrocution after being chased by a herd of wild elephants at Nalitabari upazila in Sherpur district early Saturday. 

The incident happened at Nakugau Garo Hill area near the Indian border of the upazila.

The deceased was identified as Usman Ali, 23, son of Jamal Uddin, a resident of Nakugaon Garo Hill area in the upazila.

Locals said a herd of wild elephants entered the village at an early hours and damaged some paddy fields. Later, Usman Ali alongwith other farmers chased the elephants to save their paddy fields. 
Then a chase and a counter-chase took place between the villagers and the elephants. At one stage, Osman came in contact with a live electric wire as he fell down into the filed during the countr-chase. He was injured critically. 

Locals rescued him and took to Nalitabari Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. 

Nalitabari Police Station officer in-charge Manirul Islam Bhuiyan said, “The body was handed over to his family without autopsy upon their request.” 

An unnatural death case was filed in this regard, he added.
