Separate courts in two days sentenced two men to death and 12 others to life-term imprisonment in different murder and rape cases in four districts - Chapainawabganj, Jhalakati, Tangail and Manikganj.
CHAPAINAWABGANJ: A court in the district on Tuesday sentenced a man to death and four others to life-term imprisonment for killing a cattle trader in 2017.
Additional District and Session Judge Md Rabiul Islam handed down the verdict in a packed courtroom in the afternoon.
The convict, who was awarded death sentence, is - Rakibul Islam, 37, a resident of Housepur Village in Bholahat Upazila of the district.
The life-term convicted persons are: Abdus Sabur, 26, and Karimul, 32, of Housepur Village; Md Bachchu Mia, 42, Council Mor area; and Md Erfan Ali, 37, of Puraton Haspukur Dhaniapara area under Bholahat Upazila in the district.
The court also fined the four life-term convicts Tk 50,000 each, and in default, they will have to suffer six more months in jail.
According to the prosecution, following a transaction of the money of selling cattle, the convicted persons hacked cattle trader Bulu Mia to death with sharp weapons in a mango orchard of Bholahat Upazila on July 25, 2017.
On the same day, deceased Bulu Mias wife Somiza Begum filed a murder case with Bholahat Police Station (PS) accusing 10 persons.
Investigating officer of the case Inspector Md Mahbub Alam of Detective Branch of Police submitted the charge-sheet to the court against nine persons on February 28, 2018.
Following this, this, the court delivered the verdict on Tuesday afternoon after examining the case records and taking depositions of 18 witnesses.
The court also acquitted four persons as the charges brought against them were not proved during the prosecution, said the court sources.
JHALAKATI: A court in the district on Tuesday sentenced a youth to death and a woman to life-term imprisonment for killing a minor boy after abduction in 2015.
Jhalakati Additional District and Sessions Judge Md Masudur Rahman handed down the verdict.
The condemned convicts are: Yasin Jomadder, 25, and Rehana Akhter, 45. Both of them are residents of Jorkhali Village in Kathalia Upazila of the district.
The court also acquitted another accused at that time as the charges brought against him could not be proved.
According to the prosecution, on August 28 in 2015, Mehedi Hasan, 8, went missing from Jorkhali Village of Kathalia Upazila.
On August 31 of that year, police recovered his body from a garden at the village.
Following the murder, father of the deceased filed a case with Kathalia PS accusing six people including three children.
After investigation, police submitted the charge-sheet to the court on December 30 in 2017.
Following this, the court pronounced the verdict on Tuesday after examining the case records and taking depositions of the witnesses.
The three children accused had been freed by a children court earlier.
TANGAIL: A court in the district on Tuesday sentenced two persons to life-term imprisonment for violating a 13-year-old girl in 2022.
The condemned convicts are: Sagar Ahmed, 21, and Ahmed Nabil, 21, residents of Sakhipur Upazila in the district.
Tangail District Woman and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Mahbubur Rahman handed down the verdict.
According to the case statement, Sagar developed a love affair with the girl, a resident of Basarchala area in Sakhipur Upazila. On June 29, 2022, Sagar called the girl over mobile phone to meet him at a place in Basarchala Village. When the girl appeared there, Sagar and Nabil took her to an abandoned place, and violated her in turns.
On July 2 in 2022, father of the victim girl filed a case with Sakhipur PS accusing Sagar, Nabil and Farhad Hossain.
After investigation, police submitted the charge-sheet to the court against them on February 28, 2023.
Following this, the tribunal delivered the verdict after examining the case records and taking deposition of the witnesses.
However, the court acquitted Farhad in the case as the allegations brought against him could not be proved.
MANIKGANJ: A court in the district sentenced five people to life-term imprisonment for killing a trader in 2015.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Sabina Yasmin handed down the verdict on Monday in presence of the convicts.
The court also fined the convicts Tk 20,000 each, and in default, they have to suffer six more months in jail.
The condemned convicts are: Sohag and Habia Begum, residents of Dakkhin Char Mokimpur Village; and Shahinur, Nadhan and Alamgir, residents of Matta Dhakuapara Village under Sadar Upazila in the district.
The court also acquitted three youths, named Khalil, Ali Akbar and Tutul, as the allegations brought against them could not be proved.
According to the prosecution, on August 3 in 2015, Sohag called trader Majom Ali to come out of his house to talk. Later on, Sohag along with other convicts hacked Majom to death.
The deceaseds wife Jeleka Begum as the plaintiff filed a murder case with Manikganj Sadar PS against eight people on August 4 of that year.
After investigation, Officer-in-Charge of Manikganj Sadar PS Aminur Rahman submitted the charge-sheet to the court against the accused on June 29, 2016.
Following this, the court pronounced the verdict on Monday after examining the case records and taking depositions of the witnesses.
