A sit-in program was held in Bagerhat's Mongla demanding the rivers and canals of Sundarbans keeping free of poison and pollution
On Thursday (March 14) morning, on the occasion of International Day of Action for Rivers, the program was organized on the bank of the Pasur river in Mongla industrial area organized by 'Dharitri Rakshay Amara (Dhara)' and 'Pashur River Water Keeper'.
The speakers at the programme said that effective steps should be taken to detoxify the rivers and canals adjacent to the Sundarbans and to de-pollute the industries. Illegal fishing must be stopped in the rivers and canals declared as sanctuaries in Sundarbans. The biodiversity and ecosystem of the Sundarbans will be destroyed if the industrial pollution in the rivers of Sundarbans cannot be stopped. Due to the constant sinking of cargo and ships loaded with oil-coal-clinker in Pasur River, the health of the river is being damaged.
At that time, Noor Alam Sheikh of 'Pashur River Waterkeeper', presided over the meeting where forester Israfil Bayati, general secretary of 'Mongla Fishermen's Association' Abdur Rashid Howladar, 'Pashur River Waterkeeper' volunteers Sheikh Rasel and Sushmita Mondal, members of 'Waterkeepers Bangladesh' Kamala Sarkar, Hasib Sardar spoke, among others.
