The fire that broke out at S Alam Refined Sugar Industries Ltd in Chattogram on Monday afternoon was brought under control after around 64 hours early Thursday.

Director General (DG) of the Fire Service and Civil Defence Department Brigadier General Md Main Uddin said the fire took time to get under control because the raw materials at the mills were explosive substances.

He said members of Fire Service, Army, Navy, and Air Force personnel jointly worked to douse the inferno.

During that time two firefighters received injuries, he said adding that they managed to save around 80 per cent of the 1 lakh metric tonnes of raw materials stoked at the mills for sugar production.

A five-member committee has also been formed over the incident, he said.

Meanwhile, S Alam Group General Manager Akter Hossain said the raw materials that were saved in the incident would be used for sugar production after the approval of the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI).
