A Dhaka court has deferred the verdict in a case filed against two former teachers of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College over instigating the suicide of ninth-grader Aritry Adhikary.
Judge Abdullah Al Mamun of Dhaka 12th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court for the third time set April 9 for pronouncing the verdict of the case as the judgment is yet to be prepared.
The two accused are — former acting principal of the school Nazneen Ferdous and former morning shift in-charge of the school’s Bailey Road branch Zinat Akhtar. They have been suspended by the institution after filing the case.
Earlier, the court on November 27 had set January 21 for pronouncing judgment after the end of prosecution and defence arguments in the case on that day.
Later, on January 21, Dhaka 12th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court Judge Abdullah Al Mamun postponed the verdict as the judgment was not ready for and set February 8 as the new date.
Aritry was found hanging from a ceiling fan of her residence in the capital’s Shantinagar area on December 3, 2018, hours after she and her parents were allegedly insulted by the teachers of the school. She was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
The next day, her father Dilip Adhikary filed the case with Paltan Police Station accusing three teachers of provoking Aritry’s suicide.
On March 28, 2019, an inspector of Police’s Detective Branch, Kazi Kamrul Islam, submitted the charge sheet against Nazneen Ferdous and Zinat Akhtar to CMM Court.
Dhaka 3rd Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court on July 10, 2019, framed charges against the two teachers, initiating the trial officially.
