A Dhaka court on Thursday sent Murad Hossain Sarkar, a senior teacher of Viqarunnisa Noon School, to jail in a case filed over sexual harassment of a student of the school.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jasim passed the order as police produced him before the court by Lalbagh police's sub-inspector Faiyyaz Hossain in the afternoon after the end of his two-day remand in the case.
Murad was arrested from his Kalabagan residence in the capital early Tuesday (February 27) in connection with the case filed with the Lalbagh Police Station and was placed on a two-day remand on that day.
The authorities of Azimpur branch of Viqarunnisa Noon School after an emergency meeting on Monday (February 26) suspended Murad, a mathematics teacher.
Mother of a Class VIII student of Azimpur branch of Viqarunnisa Noon School filed the case under the Woman and Child Repression Prevention Act on Monday night. In her case, she alleged that she had admitted her daughter to teacher Murad Hossain's private coaching centre at Pilkhana Road when she was a student of Class VII.
While teaching at the coaching centre, Murad Hossain used to tell his girl students indecent jokes of adults. After the end of the coaching, he often used to keep the plaintiff's daughter waiting at the centre. In such a way, the teacher had sexually harassed her daughter and several of her classmates on different days.
Earlier, some guardians filed a complaint against the teacher at the Azimpur branch of the institute on February 7.
According to the complaint, the teacher sexually harassed the students during private coaching.
Later, a committee was formed to probe the incident.
The teacher was withdrawn from his regular duty at the day-shift of the Azimpur branch and was attached to the principal's office as the allegations against him surfaced on February 24.
