At least ten people were injured after the rivals reportedly carried out bomb attacks on a victory procession of winning independent candidate Tahmina Begum at Fasiatala in Kalkini upazila of Madaripur district on Monday.
The independent candidate Tahmina Begum defeated Awami League-nominated candidate Dr Abdus Sobhan Mia Golap in Madaripur-3 constituency by 34,662 votes in the 12th national election on Sunday.
The supporters of Tahmina Begum led by former chairman of Alinagar union parishad Hafizur Rahman brought out a victory procession at around 11am. When the procession reached at Fasiatala, supporters of the AL-backed candidate, led by Alinagar incumbent UP chairman Shahid Pervez, attacked on the procession.
A chase and counter-chase took place between the two groups and several several crude bombs were exploded during that time, leaving ten people injured.
The injured were admitted to Kalkini Upazila Health Complex and Madaripur 250-bed Hospital.
Later, two of them were shifted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital. Among the injured Emarat Sarkar, 45, was critically injured.
Officer-in-charge of Kalkini Police Station Sarkar Al Mamun said police are trying to arrest the attackers.
Additional police forces have been deployed in the area following the post-polls violence.
Meanwhile, Abdus Sobhan Mia Golap is the central publicity and publication affairs secretary of Awami League while Tahmina Begum is the president of Awami League’s Kalkini upazila unit.
