COXS BAZAR, Jan 3: Miscreants have set fire to an election camp of wristwatch symbol candidate in Coxs Bazar-1 constituency. The incident happened at Pucchalia Para under Chakaria Upazila early Tuesday.
Receiving information, Bangladesh Kalyan Party Chairman and wristwatch candidate Syed Muhammad Ibrahim visited the scene along with Chakaria police in the morning.
During the stetting the election camp ablaze, the camps security guard Abu Salek was physically assaulted. Later on, he was rescued from a nearby vegetables field and admitted to Chakaria Upazila Health Complex.
Earlier on Sunday night, miscreants set fire to another election camp of wristwatch symbol at Khojakhali under the same upazila. At that time, a shop of fertiliser and pesticide near the camp was gutted by the fire.
Locals said they witnessed the fire at the election camp at around 4 am on Tuesday. At that time, the camps guard Abu Salek was rescued from a nearby election camp. The election camps chairs, table, posters and pandals cloth were gutted by the fire.
Injured Abu Salek said some 10 to 20 miscreants started vandalising the camp after coming at about 4am. "At that time, the miscreants punched on my face and then tied my hands with a rope from behind. Then they abandoned me at a nearby vegetables field. Later on, police and locals came here and admitted me to hospital rescuing from the vegetables field," he said.
Kalyan Party Chairman Syed Muhammad Ibrahim said, "Being jealous of my popularity, miscreants vandalised and set my election camp on fire. People want change of this situation. So, they decided to put seals on wristwatch symbol. Political violence doesn bring any benefit. I strongly oppose such violence."
