The deep depression over Southwest Bay and adjoining area moved Northwestwards and intensified into a cyclonic storm 'Michaung'.
Met office said in a special weather bulletin on Sunday morning.
It was centred at 6am about 1,575km southwest of Chattogram port, 1,525km southwest of Cox's Bazar port, 1,450km southwest of Mongla port, and 1,450km southwest of Payra port.
Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted distant Cautionary Signal No. 2, according to Bangladesh Metrological Department.
The maximum sustained wind speed is about 62 kph, rising to 88 kph within 54 km of the centre of the cyclone.
All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay and deep sea have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution till further notice.
