Seventeen people received bullet injuries and 23 others were injured in clashes between supporters of BNP and police at Sonargaon upazila in Narayanganj district on Saturday.
According to witnesses, leaders and activists of BNP started gathering in Kanchpur area since 3.00pm to join the road march programme as part of their central programme. Police asked the supporters of BNP not to take position on road which led to an altercation.
At one stage of the altercation, police charged batons on BNP supporters and dispersed them.
Later, leaders and activists of BNP gathered there carrying sticks and started throwing brick bats at police. Chase and counter chase between police and BNP supporters occurred at that time which continued for about half an hour. Police fired tear gas shells and rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.
Narayanganj BNP general secretary Golam Faruque Khokon said police charged batons suddenly on their peaceful protest on road.
“Many leader and activists were injured as police fired tear gas shells and rubber bullets at them,” he added.
Additional Superintendent of Police Chai Lau Marma said, “BNP supporters wanted to hold road march in Kanchpur area without taking any permission. They threw brick bats at police when the latter asked them not to take position on highway. Later, police fired rubber bullets and tear shell gas to disperse them.”
The situation is under control now, said Chai Lau Marma.
