At least 20 people were injured in a clash between supporters of Awami League (AL) nominated upazila parishad chairman candidate and rebel candidate in Tarakandi upazila of Mymensingh on Thursday night.
Nuruzzaman Sarkar, an AL's rebel candidate, claimed that they held a rally in front of the their office in Bachanik area at around 8pm and all of sudden activists of Juba League and Chhatra League, who brought out a procession in the town, attacked them with locally made weapons, hurled crude bombs.
At least 15 supporters were injured during that time. He alleged that he had informed the local administration about the possible attack but they did not take any action in this regard.
Denying the allegation, AL nominated chairman candidate Fazlul Haque said they brought out a peaceful procession from Tarakanda north bazaar and supporters of rebel candidate attacked them and opened fire, leaving five activists injured.
People set tires on fire on a road and obstructed traffic movement to protest the incident.
Officer-in-Charge of Tarakandi Police Station Abul Khayer said police rushed to the spot and took the situation under control.
He said they came to know that five people were, so far, were injured. However, no written complaint has been received yet.
After investigating the matter, legal action will be taken, he added.
