A total of 14 gold bars weighing around 1.630 kg were seized by the members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at Benapole port in Jashore's Sharsha upazila on Wednesday night.
According to BGB, acting on a tip-off, a team of the BGB-21 battalion conducted a drive in Pachvulot area and seized the bars around 11:30pm these were being smuggled to India.
BGB-21 battalion commander Lieutenant Colonel Tanveer Ahmed confirmed the matter.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, a suspected smuggler jumped into the Ichhamati River leaving behind a bag, the officer said.
The border battalion recovered the gold bars worth Tk 1.4 crore from the bag, according to the BGB officer.
Later, the gold bars were deposited with Sharsha Police Station, added the commanding officer.
