Shibpur upazila chairman dies due to intra-party rivalry in Narsingdi

Narsingdi's Shibpur upazila chairman Harun-ur- Rashid Khan died at a hospital in Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon. He died three months after he was shot by criminals at his residence.

The former Shibpur upazila AL president was shot at his house on Bazar Road in Shibpur municipality area at 6:15am on February 25.
He was initially rushed to Shibpur Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) as his condition deteriorated. Being treated at the DMCH, he returned home after showing signs of recovery.

Shibpur upazila chairman Harun-ur-Rashid Khan's nephew Fazle Rabbi Khan said, "We took our uncle to India on April 13 last after his condition was deteriorated. We returned from there on May 2. Then he was admitted to Evercare Hospital on May 7. During his treatment at Evercare Hospital, his condition worsened further. He was shifted to life support and did not open his eyes any more. Subsequently, on May 19 (Wednesday), he died at the hospital after staying at the ICU for 13 days."

Fazle Rabbi Khan further said: "After returning to the country, my uncle used to say why he was shot despite remaining attached to the ruling Awami League for a long time. He wanted to know why police did not arrest the accused. Uncle used to weep when he heard that many from the country had contacted with the prime accused now staying at Dubai and assured him of providing all the support. Hearing all these things, his condition deteriorated overnight."

Meanwhile, tension has been prevailing in the area following the death of Harunur Rashid Khan. His supporters took to the streets, held a protest procession, burnt tyres, and blocked the Dhaka-Narsingdi-Monohardi-Kishoreganj road.

To maintain control over the situation, the district police have deployed additional police at various intersections in the upazila.

Narsingdi District Awami League President GM Taleb Hossain and other Awami League leaders expressed deep shock at the death of Harunur Rashid Khan.

Since Harun-ur-Rashid Khan was shot, he had been alleging that local member of parliament (MP) Zahirul Huq Bhuiyan Mohon's younger brother Junayed Huq Bhuiyan Juno and Upazila Awami League joint general secretary Asad were involved in attempt on his life.

Contacted, Shibpur Model Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Firoze Talukder said 11 people including two named accused have been arrested in connection with a case filed over firing at the upazila chairman. Of them, Noor Mohammad has submitted statement confessing his involvement in firing at the chairman. We have learnt that four absconding accused including the prime accused have been staying at Dubai. Cooperation from Interpol has been sought to bring them back to the country.
