The High Court on Wednesday dismissed three separate income tax reference cases filed by Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus challenging the notices of National Board of Revenue (NBR).
Now, Dr Yunus must have to pay Tk 12 crore to the NBR as tax against the donations he received.
Earlier, he paid Tk 3 crore, out of Tk 15 crore, as tax, while filing an appeal in the trial court against the verdict.
Attorney General A M Amin Uddin was at the court on behalf of the state, while Barrister Mostafizur Rahman Khan was present on behalf of the petitioner.
On May 23, the hearing on the three separate cases was ended.
Dr Muhammad Yunus challenged the validity of the NBR's three notices that claimed a tax amounting to Tk 15 crore.
On June 20, 2014, the Taxes Appellate Tribunal dismissed Yunus' appeal. Later in 2015, he filed three separate income tax reference cases with the HC.
NBR served three separate notices claiming Tk 12,28,74,000 as tax against Tk 61.57 crore as donation during 2011-2012 fiscal year, Tk 1.60 crore tax against Tk 8.15 crore as donation in 2012-2013FY and Tk 1.50 crore as tax against Tk 7 crore as donation in 2013-2014FY as per the Donation Tax-1990.
