Police arrested a man reportedly for killing a local Awami League (AL) leader, who was shot at Sadar upazila of Noakhali district on Thursday, from Maijchar area under Sudharam Police Station of the district on Monday.
The arrested was Md Sabuj, 30, a resident of the area.
The victim was Md Dulal, 47, a former vice-president of Underchar union Awami League and a former member of the union parishad.
Earlier, on Thursday (May 25) around 9:15 pm, Dulal along with two other associates were returning home from an arbitration riding on the motorcycle. On the way home, when they reached in front of one Zakir's house near to Bangla Bazaar, a group of some miscreants halted Dulal's bike and opened fire on them, leaving the trio critically wounded.
Locals rescued them and took to Noakhali General Hospital where the on-duty doctors referred the victim to Dhaka Medical College but he breathed his last in the hospital around 11.15 pm on Monday while undergoing treatment.
Later, the victim's mother, Nurer Nesa lodged a case in this regard with the concerned police station accusing several unknown people.
Superintendent of Noakhali District Police Md Shahidul Islam said being informed, a team of police identified the accused and arrested Md Sabuj on Monday night.
He was handed over to Noakhali Chief Judicial Magistrate Court where he confessed his involvement in the killing.
Later, following the arrested confessional statement, police recovered firearms from his house on early Tuesday which was used in the killing, he said.
