BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the next general election will be held under a caretaker government.
"In spite of constant repression and torture, BNP will not deviate an inch from its demand of caretaker government, he said while talking to journalists after placing wreath at the grave of party founder late President Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital on Tuesday (May 30, 2023).
Referring to upholding the punishment of the party's standing committee members Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, chairperson's adviser Amanullah Aman and his wife Sabera Aman in separate corruption cases by the High Court, Fakhrul said the ongoing democratic movement can't be silenced through the judgement. People will realise their rights at any cost.
"These verdicts have manifested that the government has grabbed the entire state machinery, including the judiciary. They are trying to subdue the democratic movement by sending the opposition leaders and activists to jail with dictated verdicts," he said.
The BNP leader strongly denounced the apex court verdicts against Tuku, Aman and Sabera. "We think these are dictated judgments. The democratic movement can never be stopped by such judgments. People must realise their rights."
The BNP Secretary General said the next election will be held under a caretaker government. "We'll not deviate an inch from our demand of caretaker government."
Earlier in the day, a High Conch bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayat upheld the jail terms of BNP standing committee member Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, and party's Dhaka north city unit convener Amanullah Aman and his wife Sabera Aman in separate graft cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
