Stock of essentials is sufficient during Ramadan: Businessmen

Stock of essentials is sufficient during Ramadan: Businessmen

The businessmen on Thursday said that there is sufficient stock of essentials like edible oil, onion, sugar in the Holy Month of Ramadan beginning tomorrow while the supply side also remains normal.

Despite this, if any unholy businessman tries to make excessive profit through increasing price abnormally, the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) would cooperate with the government to take necessary action against the wrongdoers.

The businessmen said these during a view-exchange meeting on the stock, supply, import and market situation of the essential items held at the FBCCI building in the capital today.

Representatives from the manufacturers, suppliers, businessmen and consumer rights body attended the meeting.

Speaking on the occasion, FBCCI president Md Jashim Uddin said that the import, stock and supply side of essentials like onion, sugar, dates and edible oil is stable ahead of the holy month.
"There is a stock of over 3 lakh metric tons of sugar, while the stock of edible oil is also higher than the demand. There is no apprehension of shortage of supply of the essentials," he said urging the businessmen, traders and consumers to play their due role in making stable the market.

Jashim said if the prices of commodities increase in the global market, the business community would have a very little to do. "But, we'll monitor so that none can raise the price illogically. If any businessman raises the price illegally, the related business associations would have to take action against them. Otherwise, the Ministry of Commerce will cancel the license of that association while the FBCCI will extend necessary cooperation to the government in this regard."

Reminding of the consumers about their due responsibilities towards stabilizing the market, he urged the commoners not to resort to 'panic buying'.

In order to the reduce the price of broiler chicken in the kitchen market, the FBCCI chief called upon the government to take initiatives to import such chicken from abroad for one or two months.

He said if the production cost of broiler chicken is too high, the government could allow importing broiler chicken for a certain period of time until the price recedes.

Senior vice president of Moulvibazar Baboshayi Samity Faruk Ahmed said that the supply of essential items like sugar, edible oil is now normal and it would remain stable during the month of Ramadan.

Representatives of Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) Kazi Abdul Hannan said that the market could not become competitive due to the excessive tariff imposed on various essential items.

He also suggested for reducing tariff on the essential items to make the market more competitive.

FBCCI senior vice president Mostafa Azad Chowdhury Babu, vice president Amnin Helaly and Bangladesh Dokan Malik Samity president Md Helal Uddin, among others, were present on the occasion.
