Court acquits two men after 6yrs of trial

A Dhaka court on Tuesday acquitted two men, who were held by the detective branch (DB) of police on charge of keeping counterfeit currency note, after six years of trial.

Dhaka Metropolitan Special Tribunal-15 Judge Tahsin Iftekhar acquitted Manager of Bandhu Hotel Hasan Majumder and Chef Sohel Rana from the case as charges brought against them could not be proved beyond doubt.

On November 6 in 2016, a DB team conducted a drive at the hotel in Paltan area of the capital and arrested the duo on charge of keeping counterfeit notes. The incident was also recorded by a CCTV of the hotel.

An official of the team filed a case against Hasan and Sohel with the Motijheel police station. According to the First Information Report (FIR), the story was different.

It said that Hasan and Sohel were arrested from Fakirapul Kitchen Market area of the city on November 6, 2016 when they were trying to escape the place with counterfeit currency note with a face value of Tk 25lakh.

On the other hand, Manager Hasan claimed that the DB police demanded Tk 3 lakh as bribe to him. Next year, a Sub-Inspector Dewan Uzzal Hossain, one of the members of the DB team, submitted a chargesheet against the duo.

The accused filed allegation against the DB team members to police headquarters, prime ministers’ office and home ministry. At last the court acquitted them from the case.

The alleged DB members are Sub-Inspector Dewan Uzzal Hossain, Inspector Topan Kumar Dhali, Assistant Sub-Inspector Ziaur Rahman, Sohel Mahamud Abul Bashar, Mominul Huq, Nazmul Huq Prodhan, and Constable Nayan Kumar, Golam Sarwar.
