Kurigram witnesses bumper yield of gourd
Summer gourds has been widely produced this season at Phulbari upazila in Kurigram district because of favorable weather. Farmers of this area are getting more profit by cultivating different varieties of gourds in advance in this season.
Santosh Chandra Roy, farmer of Naodanga area of the upazila, said that although he does not have his own land, he has cultivated gourd in two and a half bighas of land on lease of others. As the market price is good, he has sold gourds worth Tk one lakh so far. If this market price continues, he said that he will sell gourds about Tk 2 to 2.5 lakh this season.
Mosharraf Hossain Dulu and Milon Islam, farmers of the same area, said that they cultivated summer gourd in 1 bigha of land. The yield of gourd this year is better than last year. They have sold gourds worth Tk 70,000 so far.
They also said that it is possible to earn more than Tk one lakh by spending Tk 10,000-20,000 on one bigha of land in gourd cultivation.
Phulbari upazila agriculture officer Nilufa Yasmin said that marginal farmers are inclined to grow gourd day by day as they are encouraged and given various support from the upazila agricultural office.
She further said that in this upazila the farmers have cultivated gourd in 12 hectares of land in summer season. It is ongoing. It is expected that in winter season, gourd will be cultivated in 25 to 30 hectares of land.
