Nine people, who were killed after being struck by lightning strike on Thursday afternoon, were laid to rest at their family graveyards at Ullapara upazila in Sirajganj district early Friday.
Of the deceased, five were buried at Shibpur village while four at Matikora village.
In Shibpur village, Shanti Khatun, wife of slain Shamser Ali, was seen crying and wailing at the death of her husband. She lost not only her husband but also her son Shaheen, daughter-in-law Mokam Hossain, grandson Monnaf Hossain and brother-in-law Afsar Ali.
Another child of this woman is now receiving treatment at hospital. Men and women from different villages are coming to offer their condolences to Shanti Khatun.
The tragic accident has cast a shadow of mourning in Shibpur and Matikora villages.
Shanti Khatun said, “There is nothing left in my family. Five people, including my husband, child, son-in-law, grandson, were killed by lightning strike. I cannot bear this grief.”
Meanwhile, nine people, including five members of a family, were killed and five others injured in lightning strike on Thursday afternoon.
The deceased are Mokam Hossain, 60, Monnaf Hossain,18, Shamser Ali, 62, Shaheen ,32, Akter Hossain ,60, of Shibpur village; and Abdul Quddus, 60, Shah Alam, 42, Ritu Khatun, 14, and Jannati Khatun, 14, of Matikora village in the upazila.
Panchkroshi Union Parishad chairman Touhidul Islam Feroz said the farmers were sowing Aman saplings in a paddy field at Matikora Dakshinpara village in the afternoon. “They took shelter in at a shallow room near the field when rain started suddenly. At that time thunderbolt fell on that house, leaving eight farmers died on the spot and six other injured,” he said
Being informed, members of Fire Service rescued the injured and took them to Ullapara Upazila Health Complex. Of the injured, Jannati Khatun died in the hospital while receiving treatment there.
