Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has demanded fair investigation into the human rights situation in the country and actions against the persons responsible under the supervision of the United Nations.

The BNP leader raised the demands narrating forced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, implicating opposition leaders and activists in thousands of false cases during the reign of present Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government at a milad and doa mahfil organised at the party's central office at Nayapaltan in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Dhaka City BNP arranged the doa mahfil on the occasion of 78th birthday of Khaleda Zia.

Mirza Fakhrul said the government of Sheikh Hasina has been ruling Bangladesh for long 15 years in a dreadful fascist style using the state machinery. The government has been occupying power resorting to brutal torture and repression.

He said Khaleda Zia's history was the history of democracy. She has spent her entire life for protecting, restoring and exercising democracy. The dreadful fascist government has kept in jail by implicating her in false cases as she has been fighting for democracy.

"Our leader Tareque Rahman has been sent to exile by implicating him in false cases. Cases have been filed against 35 lakh leaders and activists of BNP. Police have been arresting them everyday under false cases," he said.

Terming Khaleda Zia as an "institution," Fakhrul said she has constantly been fighting to free the country's people from the shackles of misrule of Sheikh Hasina government.

Comparing the present government with the occupied Pakistan army of 1971, Mirza Fakhrul said the government which remains in power illegally must be compared with Pakistani occupation forces. An un-elected government has been destroying all the hopes and inspirations of the country's people resorting to torture, killings and murders.

Mentioning that the government would not leave power so easily, the BNP secretary general said it has already understood that people are not with it. "We must have to reinstate a pro-people government removing the present government," he said.

He also reiterated the demand of releasing BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia from house arrest and forming a neutral Election Commission under a neutral government by abolishing the parliament.

The milad and doa mahfil were attended by Dhaka City South BNP convener Aman Ullah Aman, BNP's senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, joint secretary general Khairul Kabir Khokon, BNP leader Abdus Salam, and Mir Sharafat Ali Shopu, among others.
