Women face sexual harassment, men account hacking on social media

Women are becoming the victims of sexual harassment and pornography compared to men on social media, while men are becoming victims of mobile banking and ATM card hacking.

It was stated by the representatives of Cyber Crime Awareness Foundation (CCAF) while addressing a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters' Unity at Segunbagicha in the capital on Saturday.

Kazi Mustafiz, CCA Foundation president and head of the research team, chaired the press conference.

Senior Lecturer, Law Department, East West University Monira Nazmi Jahan presented the survey findings.

Monira Nazmi Jahan said  misinformation is increasing through the social media platform after the Coronavirus pandemic.

Most of the victims are between 18 and 30 years of age, with a rate of 80.90 per cent.

Some 73.4 per cent of victims do not seek legal recourse after being harassed, as per the report.

Apart from this, only 7.04 per cent of the victims who took legal recourse expressed their satisfaction with the legal services.

Some 23.79 per cent users fell prey to social media account hacking during the period from February 15, 2021 to March 2, 2022, according to a latest survey report.

Besides, about 50.27 per cent of the victims of cyber attacks in the country are victims of online bullying in various ways.

These include abuse by defacing images, pornographic content, abuse on social media and online and phone messaging threats which are increasing gradually.

A total of 18 questions were asked to 199 individual victims in the survey from February 15, 2021 to March 2, 2022. Based on their opinions, a report was prepared.
