20,000 people marooned in Manpura
Over 20,000 people in 10 villages have been inundated for the last four days as water of the Meghna River is flowing above the danger level in Bhola.
Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer Anwar Hossain said five hectares of Aman seedbeds were damaged by the tidal water. However, if the tidal water lasts for a long time, the amount of damage may increase, he said.
Meanwhile, the river water overflowed the flood control embankment at the end of Charfaizuddin village of Hajihat union of the upazila at 4 pm on Saturday and entered the locality.
Deputy Assistant Engineer of Water Development Board (Division-2) Abdur Rahman said the water of Meghna is flowing 69 cm above the danger level.
Locals of the affected area said that they have been trapped in tidal water for four days. Family members are living in starvation as they cannot cook. However, until today (Saturday), they received no assistance from the local administration.
Jahanara, Rahim and Kulsum, who are stuck in water, said that they have been eating dry bread for the last 4 days as they had not been able to cook.
It was seen that more than 20,000 people of Purbo Andirpar, Pashchim Andirpar, Kawartek, Ishwarganj, Kulagazi Taluk village of No. 1 Manpura union and Daserhat, Sonarchar, Charyatin, Chargyan village of Hazirhat union and Alamnagar and Masterhat area of Uttar Sakuchia union in the upazila were inundated.
Chairman of No. 1 Manpura Union Amanat Ulla Alamgir said that most of the residents of his union have been in a state of waterlogging for the four days. “Due to the lack of relief from the government, they could not give assistance to the people of the affected areas.”
Charfasson Upazila Nirbahi Officer Al Noman said that the project implementation officer has been instructed to prepare a list of victims.
