The throat-slit body of a 27-year-old female doctor was found at a hotel at Panthapath in the capital on Wednesday night, police said.
The deceased was Dr Jannatul Nayeem Siddiqua who had been undertaking a training on gynaecology at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after passing MBBS from Community Medical College at Maghbazar.
Police were informed at around 11:30pm after which they went to the spot and found the body of the doctor on the third floor of the hotel opposite to Square Hospital at Panthapath.
The body was sent to the DMCH morgue for postmortem, Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of Kalabagan Police Station, said. "There were signs of knife wounds on different parts of the body."
"It is suspected that the doctor's boyfriend fled after allegedly killing her," the OC added.
"Also, the manager of the hotel was detained in connection with the incident."
Police said Dr Jannatul and her so-called boyfriend Rezaul boarded 'Family Service Apartment Residential Hotel at Panthapath on Wednesday morning by introducing themselves as husband and wife. Later at night, Jannatul found dead inside Room No. 305 on the third floor of the hotel. The body also bore several injury marks, said OC Saiful Islam.
"Slain Dr Jannatul's family didn't agree that their daughter married Rezaul Karim Reza. The issue often caused troubles between them. Perhaps, Dr Jannatul was murdered at the residential hotel in a planned way because of it," DMP DC (Media) Md Faruque Hossain said.
"Since the killer has already been identified, we will be able to unearth the mystery behind the murder after his arrest," he said.
However, police have learnt that Jannatul's family did not accept Rezaul as their daughter's husband. As a result, they had a very strained relationship over the matter. They also lived in a number of residential hotels earlier as husband and wife.
The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue.
The victim's so-called boyfriend Rezaul has been absconding following the incident. "Police have launched a manhunt to nab Rezaul," OC Saiful said.
Meanwhile, slain Dr Jannatul's father Dr (Retd) Md Shafiqul Alam told journalists at the DMCH morgue that they hailed from village Chandanbari under Monohardi upazila in Narsingdi district. They live at 'Dolon Champa' building at No. 2 Momenbagh at Rajarbagh.
Demanding punishment of the brutal murder of the daughter, Jannatul's father said, "I want life for life. I want the capital punishment of the killer. I want his death by hanging."
