NSU introduces Media and Journalism course



North South University (NSU) has launched a new department 'Media and Journalism' under the Department of Political Science & Sociology with an objective of increasing skilled workforce in the world of mass communication and journalism.

A roundtable discussion session titled ‘কেমনমিডিয়াগ্র্যাজুয়েটচাই’ was held at the NSU on Saturday (August 6) on the occasion of the inauguration.
Hasibur Rahman, Executive Director, Management and Resources Development Initiative (MRDI), Syed Ishtiaq Reza, CEO and Editor-in-Chief, Global Television, Ashraf Kaiser, CEO of Benchmark PR, Anisul Hoque, Prominent writer and Associate Editor of The Daily Prothom Alo, Syed GousulAlamShaon, Managing Partner and Country Head, Grey Advertising Bangladesh Ltd., Tushar Abdullah, CEO, Ekhon TV, Gitiara Nasreen, Professor, Dept. of Mass Communication and Journalism,University of Dhaka, Abdun Noor Tushar, CEO, Gati Media Ltd, Khairul Basher, Head of Communications, Grameenphone Ltd, Syed Ashfaqul Haque, Executive Editor, The Daily Starand other dignitaries were present in the event.

Professor Atiqul Islam, Vice-Chancellor of NSU, in his speech compared journalism with the mirror of a country or state and said that all kinds of opportunities will be provided to make the students of the journalism department proficient. NSU is determined to develop skilled media workers.

Professor Gitiara Nasreen said in her speech, “Students should understand the language of media. In addition, they should participate in research. At present media research in Bangladesh is not progressing properly. A large budget is required for research.”

Anisul Hoque, Prominent writer and Associate Editor of The Daily Prothom Alo, said that freedom of expression in the media is very important.But like other countries around world we have some limitations. In the meantime, he also said, this subject also needs more development in our country.

Abdun Noor Tushar said that students of journalism should have the ability to adapt to the variability of media and should have strong knowledge on both Bengali and English language. We need to produce graduates who will fit for the global market.
 
Professor Sk Tawfique M. Haque, Chair & Director, SIPG, NSU, presented details about the curriculum of the program.

Head of Communications, Grameenphone Khairul Basher emphasized on the importance of acquiring skills in traditional media as well as new topics in the changing knowledge of media for journalism students.

North South University, the country's first private university that started its journey in 1992, has opened a new path in the education world of the country. Beyond the national level, it is equally showing its skills in the international arena. The university is determined to maintain its reputation as an international standard university. Following this, the US-based institution has been ranked NSU among the world's best 500 universities in the ‘QS Asia University Ranking – 2022’.

One of the objectives of the newly launched Media and Journalism program is to make students proficient through the use of modern technology. The students of the department have facilities ranging from highly modern labs to large facilities like NSU TV Radio.
