Passenger crisis at Sadarghat despite fare reduction

Despite fare reduction, the luxury launches on Barisal-Dhaka route are facing passenger crisis.

The officials of the launch at Sadarghat said after the inauguration of the Padma Bridge, many launches left the ghat with few passengers. Though the number of passengers in the launches has increased but not up to the mark.

Md Reshad, manager of Surabhi Launch Company on Barisal-Dhaka route, said passengers were inclined towards launch's cabins in the previous days, but it is not found in them now. At present, some of the cabins of the launches remain empty almost every day.

A launch staff said the launches of Parabat company on the current Dhaka-Barisal route are running according to one rule, and the launches of Suravi-Sunderban, Adventure, Manami, Kirtankhola companies are running according to another rule. Meanwhile, Parabat company is increasing the fare by understanding the pressure of the passengers. And other companies are charging Tk 200 per passenger on the big launch deck and Tk 150 per passenger on the small launch deck. But the deck fare fixed by the government on this route is Tk 352. And AC and non-AC single cabins of Tk 1,200 to Tk 1,300 are currently selling at Tk 800 to Tk 1,000. A double cabin of Tk 2,400 is being sold at Tk 1,800 and Tk 2,000. Sofa rent of Tk 700 reduced to Tk 600.

Even, without getting a passenger in the cabin, most of the single cabins are being given free fare for one passenger with another passenger. As a result, two people can travel in a single cabin. If there are more than two passengers in double cabin, their deck fare is also waived.

Passengers said the launch companies have increased their fares on various pretexts but now they are not getting travelers even after reducing the fares.
