Kishore-Kishori Club members stop child marriage in Patuakhali
Members of Kishore-Kishori Club stopped a child marriage at Bauphal upazila in Patuakhali district on Saturday afternoon.
The child is Tahmina Akter, 12, daughter of Habib Howladar, a resident of Charmijan area under Chandradwip union. She is a sixth grader of ASM Firoz High School.
Locals said Tahmina Akter's marriage was arranged with Tareq Gazi, son of Jahangir Gazi of the same village. Some members of Chandradwip Kishori-Kishori Club informed Asma Begum, a member from reserved seats at Chandradwip Union Parishad.
Later, the reserved member and Kishori-Kishori Club members went to Tahmina's house and stopped her child marriage. At that time, Tahmina's mother gave a bond that Tahmina would not marry before until she became an adult.
UP member Asma Begum confirmed the matter and said that a VGD card would be issued for Tahmina's mother soon.
Club members Maruf and Shumi said "We are very happy to be able to prevent a child marriage. Our classmates used to get married in front of our eyes for so long. Now it will not be allowed to happen. There will be no child marriage in Chandradwip.''
Chandradwip ASM Firoz High School headmaster Abdur Rob said awareness among parents and students is growing after the formation of Kishore-Kishori Club with the help of Department of Women's Affairs.
Upazila Women's Affairs Officer Kaniz Marjia said, "Everyone should come forward like Kishore-Kishori Club members to prevent child marriages in the country."
