9 killed as private car, motorcycle rammed by bus in Gopalganj

Nine persons including two couples were killed when a speeding passenger bus rammed a private car and a motorcycle at Kashiani in Gopalganj district on Saturday.

The accident happened at about 11:00am at Dakkhin Fukra area under Kashiani upazila on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway.
Kashiani Police Station's sub-inspector Sirajul Islam confirmed the matter.

He said the slain eight were former Gopalganj commissioner Prafulla Kumar Saha's son and Dhaka's BIRDEM Hospital's physician Dr Basudeb Saha, his wife Shibani Saha and son Ahsanullah Science and Technology University's Electrical and Electronics Department's second year student Shopnil Saha, their car driver Aziz Mia of Dwari area under Adabar Police Station in Dhaka; Firoz Molla and his wife Ruma Begum of village Fukra under Kashiani upazila, and Anik Mia and Jesmine Akter.

The identity of another deceased could not be ascertained.

Locals said Dr Basudeb Saha was coming to Gopalganj from Dhaka on Saturday morning along with his wife and son to see his sick mother. On the other hand, Anik Mia and Jesmine Akter were coming to Gopalganj town from village Fukra of Kashiani by a motorcycle.

First, the speeding private car rammed the motorcycle. Just at that time, a Dhaka-bound bus of 'Rajib Paribahan' from Patharghata in Barguna district hit the private car while giving side to a Nosimon. Being hit by the bus, the badly damaged private car fell on a paddy husking machine beside the highway while the bus turned-turtle on the road being crashed with a tree.

The accidents left seven people dead on the spot while two others succumbed at Sadar hospital.

Gopalganj deputy commissioner Shahida Sultana said the accidents took place due to placing of rice husking machines on the roadside and driving the vehicles speedily.

She said directive was given to treat the injured properly. The district administration would provide Tk 10,000 to each of the deceased families and Tk 5,000 to each of the injured persons.

The bodies have been kept at Gopalganj General Hospital morgue under police custody.
