Rising trend of Covid cases ominous: DGHS

The ongoing upward trend of Coronavirus infection is an ominous sign, Director General of the health directorate Prof Dr ABM Khurshid Alam has said.

Though Omicron cases have increased in the country but the number of patients infected with Delta variant is still high, said the health DG while addressing at a virtual press conference on the current situation of Covid-19 at his office on Monday.

Dr Khurshid Alam said, “After conducting genome sequencing test of Coronavirus infected patients of Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), various government and non-government organizations, it was found that 80 per cent of the patients infected with Delta variant.”

He further said, “The number of patients infected with Omicron is high in the capital city. The infection rate is less in other divisional cities. The situation may get worse if the 11-point guidelines instructed by the government are not followed.”

“Genome sequencing is time consuming and costly matter. It takes 14 to 15 days,” said Dr Khurshid Alam.

He said, “Now most of the people who are suffering from Coronavirus have not been vaccinated. Many people are also dying from co-morbidity (cancer, heart disease and hypertension).”

There is no specific information about the total number of deaths from Omicron in the country so far, said the health DG.

Additional Director General of Meerjady Sabrina Flora said, “It is not enough to just do Covid-19 test and identify. Many people are traveling from one place to another all over the country including the capital every day which may risks spread of the virus widely.”

She also warned that the risk of infection and death would increase if the required health rules are not followed strictly.
