AL places 4 proposals over EC formulation

The ruling Awami League placed four proposals on formation of Election Commission (EC) during a dialogue with President M Abdul Hamid on Monday.

A 10-member AL delegation, led by its President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, joined the dialogue with the President over forming an acceptable EC at Bangabhaban here and placed the proposals titled 'Democracy and Elections: Bangladesh Awami League' to the President.

The proposals included enacting a new law, strengthening the EC and using technology in polls.
The meeting was held at about 4 pm at the Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban.

Other members of the AL delegation were: AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader, advisory council members Amir Hossain Amu and Tofail Ahmed, and presidium members Begum Matia Chowdhury, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Dr Mohammad Abdur Razzaque, Lieutenant Colonel (retd) Muhammad Faruk Khan, Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman.

After the dialogue, AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader briefed journalists on the AL's proposals at AL's Bangabandhu Avenue central office this evening.

He said according to the Article 118 of the Constitution, the President will appoint the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and other election commissioners.

In the process of appointing the CEC and other commissioners, the President will appoint those whom he deems suitable, the AL general secretary said.

He said an appropriate law may be enacted for the appointment of the CEC and other election commissioners in line with the Article 118 of the Constitution.

Quader said the use of information and technology should be ensued in all elections aiming those free, fair, neutral and transparent.

Replying to a question, he said the government will try its best to pass an act "over formulation of the new EC" in the ongoing session of the House.

There is a necessity of a law in appointing CEC and other election commissioners, and forming the Election Commission, the AL general secretary said.

He said the Awami League has respect to the Constitution and the laws of the country.

"The AL has full confidence and trust in the deep knowledge, wisdom and prudence of the President achieved in his long political life and we have full confidence in any just initiative taken by the President," Quader said.
