Lyricist Mehbubul Hassan Russell might have committed suicide out of deep frustration in his personal life, assumed police initially. However, the matter cannot be confirmed without a full investigation, said the people involved in the investigation of the death.

On Thursday night, police recovered the hanging body of Russel, 47, from his house in city’s Tejgaon area after being informed by his family.
Ashiq Hasan, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Tejgaon Industrial Zone), said, “Russell used to write songs as well as being a journalist. However, during this pandemic period, he remained at house for about two years.”

He said, “His hanging body was recovered from the house yesterday after receiving the death news. The cause of his death is being investigated.”

Police are also investigating a handwritten suicide note which was found from the spot and experts will check whether the writing of the note found with the body is his or not. The autopsy report will also reveal the exact cause of death, said police.

Hafiz Al Faruk, additional deputy commissioner of DMP, said, “We went to Russell’s house after receiving news from the family. He was found hanging from a ceiling fan in a room of the house.”

Citing the family, police said Russell went to his room after having dinner with them. “Family members of the deceased broke open the door of his room after getting no response from him around 11:30 pm. Later, they saw the body was hanging inside the room and informed police.”

According to police, Russell is survived by his mother and younger brother. Russell was unemployed for one year and a half. At one point, he was sent to a drug rehabilitation center.

ADC Hafiz Al Faruk said a suicide note was found in Russell’s room which says, “No one is responsible for my death.”

Russell’s handwriting was initially confirmed by his family and friends. However, the police are investigating the matter.
