Pakistan sniff victory as Bangladesh reaches 147-6 at tea

A stubborn partnership of Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim raised Bangladesh's hope to salvage the second and final Test but Pakistan brought them back in winning way, trapping the latter for run out just on the stroke of tea of day five at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

The hosts reached 147-6 at the second interval of the day and still needed 66 runs to force Pakistan bat for the second time in the match with Shakib Al Hasan batting as only specialist batter on 25 runs, reports BSS.

Pakistan declared the first innings on 300-4 in severely rain-hit game that saw only 63.2 overs were possible in the first three days. The third day was washed out entirely while only 6.2 overs were possible on day two.

But Pakistan desperate for a victory wrapped up Bangladesh's first innings for 87 thanks to 8-42 of offspinner Sajid Khan and forced the hosts follow-on.

Fast bowlers Hasan Ali and Shaheen Shah Afridi then got into act, leaving Bangladesh 25-4, claiming two wickets apiece.

The first resistance came from Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das, who put a brake on Pakistan's surge, combining for a 73-run for the fifth wicket stand.

Sajid Khan, whose eight-wicket haul was the fourth best individual bowling by a Pakistan bowler, broke the stubborn partnership, dismissing Liton for 45.

However Mushfiqur got Shakib as his partner and again kept Pakistan bowlers at bay. Desperate Pakistan finally ended this partnership, inflicting a run out on Mushfiqur Rahim who was just two runs shy of his second fifty in
consecutive Test.

Mushfiqur was out on 48 as Pakistan closed in on an unexpected victory to complete a series whitewash.

Pakistan earlier won the first Test by eight wickets before sweeping Bangladesh in three-match T20 International series.
