Key accused in Cumilla councillor murder killed in 'gunfight'


The prime accused in Cumilla ward councillor Syed Mohammad Sohel murder case was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Sadar upazila in Cumilla district early Thursday.

Shah Alam, a resident of Sujanagar Purbapara area under the upazila, was killed after midnight.

Two more persons--accused number 3 Md Sabbir Hossain, 28 and accused number 5 Md Sajon of the case--were killed in another gunfight with police at Songraish area in Cumilla city after Monday midnight.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from Kotwali Model Police Station and Detective Branch (DB) of police conducted went to Chanpur Ratnabati Gumti Beribandh area at about 1:30am, said the police station OC Anwarul Azim.

Sensing the presence of police, the criminals opened fire on them. Police said they fired back for 'self-defence.'

Later, police recovered the bullet-ridden body of Alam while others managed to flee the scene, said the OC.

Two policemen also sustained injuries during the shootout, he added.

It may be mentioned that six people including councillor Sohel were shot by miscreants at his Sujanagar office in Cumilla city in the afternoon on November 22 last. Later, Sohel and his companion Haripada Saha succumbed while underwent treatment at the hospital.

Later, the councillor's brother Syed Rumon lodged a case with Kotwali Model Police Station accusing 21 persons, including  local drug peddler Shah Alam as the prime accused.
