National Professor Rafiqul Islam laid to rest at Azimpur


National Professor Rafiqul Islam was laid to eternal rest besides his father's grave at Azimpur Graveyard in the capital on Wednesday following his namaj-e-janaza at Dhaka University Central Mosque premises.

Earlier, the Bangla Academy paid last respect to the former director general of the organisation. Then his body was taken to the Central Shaheed Minar premises where people from all strata of the society paid their last respect to the renowned academician. Later, he was buried at Azimpur Graveyard after Asr prayer following another namaj-e-janaza.
The body of Rafiqul Islam was taken to the Bangla Academy premises at 1:30pm. A researcher on Nazrul, the coffin containing his body was kept at the Nazrul Mancha at the academy. His colleagues, friends and well wishers paid their last respect to him placing wreaths on his coffin there.

On behalf of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Cultural Affairs Secretary Md Abul Mansur, Bangla Academy's Director General Md Nurul Huda, Poet Kazi Nazrul Institute, Shaluk, Bangabandhu Foundation, Swadhinata Foundation and National Implementation Committee for Celebration of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's Birth Centenary paid their last respect to the late academician placing wreaths on his coffin.

Finally, Kolkata's Kazi Nazrul Islam University's Professor Monalisa Das paid respect placing wreath on the coffin of late Rafiqul Islam.

Later, Rafiqul Islam's only son Barshan Islam said, "My father's life was full of successes. I have never seen any failure in his life. My father took photographs on his camera during the Language Movement of 1952, which subsequently became history. We couldn't know about the history of Language Movement if the photographs were not there. I asked my father why he didn't write his name on the photographs. In reply, he simply said, "I don't need to put my name on the photographs. Now, all can know about the history. It's enough for me."

Nazrul University's professor Monalisa Das said, "We had a plan to confer Honorary Doctor of Literature on Professor Rafiqul Islam Sir. But, it couldn't be materialised due to Covid-19 pandemic. We will certainly materialise our plan."
