AL candidate in Mathabhanga UP polls blames Cumilla-2 MP for his defeat

Ruling Awami League's 'Boat' symbol candidate Nazrul Haque Bhuiyan of Mathabhanga Union Parishad under Homna upazila in Cumilla blamed Cumilla-2 (Homna-Titas) MP Salima Ahmad Merry and local Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Nazma Ashrafi and Meghna UNO Probir Kumar Roy for manipulating the polls to defeat him in the election held on November 28 last.

"Salima Ahmad Merry didn't assist me in the election since the date of announcement of polls schedule. Instead, she preferred Mathabhanga Union BNP Vice-President Jahangir Hossain Molla, who contested the polls as independent candidate with 'Anaras' symbol and assisted him to defeat the Boat symbol," he alleged while addressing a press conference at Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Nazrul, also acting president of Union AL and outgoing chairman, demanded cancellation of the polls and holding re-election. At the same time, he also demanded exemplary punishment of the accused for conspiring against the Awami League candidate.

He alleged that ADC Nazma Ashrafi picked him up and handed over to the UNO at around 1.30pm on the day of election. He was released from the UNO office after 5.00pm. In the meantime, Jahangir Mollah and her associates rigged the polls massively and won it with a difference of 1,200 votes.

He also blamed the local MP for allegedly resorting to repression and threat against his family using her relatives and musclemen.

Upazila AL General Secretary Siddiqur Rahman Abul, AL leaders Mosharraf Hossain, Abul Kashem Prodhan, Abdul Khaleque, Didar Ahmed and Siddiqur Rahman also present the press conference.
