A total of 240 people, who returned to Bangladesh from South Africa over the last one month, went missing, said Health Minister Zahid Maleque.

"In the last one month, 240 Bangladesh nationals have returned from South Africa. But, they could not be traced anymore after entering the country as they kept their mobile phones switched off," he told journalists at a briefing after an inter-ministerial meeting over Omicron at the Health Ministry's conference room on Tuesday.
Expressing strong resentment, the Health Minister said, "It is quite surprising that 240 persons have returned to Bangladesh from South Africa in the last one month. We have tried to trace their contacts. But, it is unfortunate that all of them have switched off their mobile phones. They have also given wrong addresses."

He said Coronavirus' new variant Omicron is more risky than Delta variant. The government remains cautious to prevent the spread of the new variant.

The minister said arriving from the countries of African continent is being discouraged. However, those arriving from the Omicron-infected countries, they must have to stay in 14 days institutional quarantine. Also, the responsibility of maintaining the quarantine facilities will be given to the Armed Forces.

Emphasising the necessity of monitoring those who have arrived from abroad, he said it is important for local representatives to keep tabs on the returnees and ensure they are maintaining all kinds of health guidelines.

In this case the houses of the returnees might even be marked with a flag, he added.

Besides, strict restrictions will be imposed on borders. Letters will be sent to all the districts. All kinds of political and social functions will have to be curtailed to prevent the infection.
