Arrested accused drivers Harun Mia and Rasel Khan for crashing Notre Dame College student Nayeem Hasan to death by the garbage truck of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) had no driving licences. They had been driving the vehicle for a long time without licences.

It was stated by Farzana Huq, assistant police super and staff officer (Ops and Media Wing) of RAB-3 on Friday afternoon.

Quoting Harun Mia, she said he had been regularly driving the city corporation's garbage truck since 2020. On November 24 last, his assistant Md Rasel Khan was driving the truck in absence of him. "Both Harun and Rasel have no driving licences," she said.

Earlier in Friday morning, RAB arrested Nayeem Hasan's murder accused garbage truck's main driver Harun Mia alias Kailla Harun conducting a raid at Jatrabari area in the capital.

The RAB official also said legal action is under process against the arrested Harun.

In a press release, the DSCC Public Relations Officer (PRO) Abu Naser on Thursday (November 25) said the DSCC sacked cleaner Harun Mia for driving the truck taking it from staff driver (Heavy Vehicles) Md Iran Mia illegally. Besides, another cleaner Abdur Razzak was sacked.

He said DSCC's driver (Heavy Vehicles) Md Iran Mia was also suspended for allowing cleaner Harun Mia to drive the garbage truck after taking its allocation illegally. A departmental case was also filed against Iran Mia.

Earlier in the day, police said that Rasel had taken the truck's keys from Harun and took out the truck from Sayedabad area in Dhaka.

A Dhaka court granted the police three days to interrogate Rasel.

At about 11:20am on November 24, Nayeem Hasan was crossing the road adjacent to Bangabandhu Square roundabout at Gulistan under Paltan Model Police Station. At that time, a speeding garbage truck (Registration Number Dhaka Metro-Sha 11-1244) hit 18-year-old Nayeem Hasan  coming from the opposite direction. Rasel Khan was driving the truck at that time though he has no licence. Staff driver Harun allowed Rasel to drive the truck as an alternative. Rasel is a cleaner. Earlier on Thursday, Rasel was sent to jail by a court in Dhaka for questioning.

On the other hand critically injured Nayeem Hasan was rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors at the Department of Emergency pronounced him dead at about 11:45am.

Patrol police and pedestrians caught Rasel Khan and two other cleaners--Golam Rabbani and Belal--when they were trying to flee from the place of accident.

They were later handed over to police. Besides, the garbage truck was seized. In the meantime, Nayeem Hasan's body was handed over to his family members after postmortem at the DMCH morgue.

Slain Nayeem's father Shah Alam Dewan filed a case in connection with the murder of his son.
