BCL leader Saikat, Rabiul confess involvement in Pirganj attacks
Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader Saikat Mondol and muezzin of a local mosque Rabiul Islam who were arrested by RAB in connection with attacks on Hindu community at Pirganj in Rangpur have confessed their involvement in the incident.
Taking all the responsibilities, they made confessions to judge Delwar Hossain of Senior Judicial Magistrate Court-2 in Rangpur on Sunday night (Oct 24, 2021). The judge recorded their confessional statements under Section 164.
Court GRO Shahidul Islam said Saikat Mondol gave confessional statement in a case filed under the Digital Security Act, while Rabiul Islam gave confessional statement in a case filed in connection with vandalism and setting fire.
Saikat was the vice-president of Carmicheal College BCL Philosophy Department's Committee. He was relieved of the BCL on October 18, just one day after the incident.
He hails from vilage Majhipara in Ramnathpur union under Pirganj upazila. Though his father Rashedul Islam is not associated with any political party, his grand-father Abul Hossain Mondol is the vice-president of Union Awami League.
Locals said though Saikat was involved in BCL politics, he used to follow the ideology of a religion-based political party from earlier.
Both Saikat and Rabiul went into hiding immediately after the attacks and vandalism on Hindu community.
It may be recalled that a group of people vandalised, looted and set ablaze 28 houses of Hindu community at villages Bara Karimpur, Kasba and Uttarpara under Pirganj upazila at night on October 17 last over an allegedly blasphemous Facebook post by Paritosh Sarker, a youth of Majhipara in Ramnathpur.
