BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that the ruling Awami League-led government is trying to achieve its political goals by capitalising the incidents of attacks on puja mandaps across the country.

Drawing attention to the Awami League's 'communal harmony' procession in the capital Dhaka, the BNP Secretary General made the allegation taking part in a discussion on Tuesday evening.

The discussion was organised by Ziaur Rahman Foundation at Abdus Salam Hall of Jatiya Press Club on its 22nd founding anniversary.

Mirza Fakhrul said: "This Awami League government is creating division in the country in a very planned way. They have indulged in attaining their political objectives by capitalising this division between Hindus and Muslims. On Tuesday, the Awami League brought out a peace procession in Dhaka."

"You've created the ground, you've set ablaze, you've fired and killed. Now, you have brought out a peace procession in Dhaka after killing the innocent people. It is a matter of shame. This is called Awami League's true face. They have been doing this since their birth," he said.

The BNP leader observed that people in Bangladesh continue to suffer as long as Awami League remains in power. "We'll lose all our achievements. We'll continue to go down. So, it's our responsibility to oust this monster from power."

"We must have to oust this monster from power. All Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, Christians, black and white, left and right must oust this demon from power through  united efforts. Then we will have to build a state of people, we will have to form a people's government, we will have to create a habitable land for people. We will be able to show respect to Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman if we do it," he said.

The BNP Secretary General said the presence of devotees at this year's puja mandaps was less. "You see, the government has created a communal crisis in the country. Dada [Gayeshwar Chandra Roy) is here. Puja was held at Dada's house and we visited there. We saw a great festive mood when we went there last year. There were several puja mandaps there. The roads were packed with people."

"But, this time, we did not see much people. They were scared. Puja was not being held. I also saw less number of people at Dhakeshwari Temple this year. I visited Banani puja mandap and saw a very few people there. But, why? They are our neighbours, brothers and sisters. They are the citizens of this independent country. Why they won't be able to celebrate their festival? The Awami League government is creating division in a very planned way between Hindu and Muslim," he said.

Fakhrul said Awami League will never return democracy to people of this country. They killed democracy in 1975 and then started killing once again from 2008.

With Professor Farhad Halim Doner, executive director of Ziaur Rahman Foundation, the discussion was participated by BNP Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, academic Professor AFM Yusuf Haider, professionals' leader Gazi Abdul Huque, Engr Mia Muhammad Qaiyyum, Prof ABM Obaidul Islam of Dhaka University, Dr Parvez Reza Kakon of Ziaur Rahman Foundation, Prof Abdul Karim and Dhaka University JCD leader Raqibul Islam Raqib. The discussion was moderated by Krishibid Shamimur Rahman Shamim.

The discussion was also attended by Ziaur Rahman Foundation's Dr Shah Muhammad Aman Ullah and Prof Morshed Hasan Khan, among others.
