Woman dies after setting herself on fire

A case has been filed over the death of a pregnant housewife, who had died after set herself on fire by pouring kerosene in Netrakona’s Kalmakanda upazila.

Deceased Suraiya Newaz Labonya’s uncle Shah Mostafa Md Saidul Islam filed the case against six people, including Labonya’s husband Md Shahinur Alam Shahin, with Kalmakanda Police Station on Saturday

The police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Abdul Ahad Khan said that police are trying to arrest the accused in the case.

According to the case statement, Labonya got married with Shaheen, a resident of Ghaggarh village in Dhobaura upazila of Mymensingh, one year ago. Labonya’s husband Shaheen demands Tk 2 lakh as dowry after the marriage.

“Her husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law, sister-in-law and brother-in-law used to harass her mentally for not giving the dowry. Labonya came to her father’s house in August,” said the statement.

On October 9, Labonya’s husband came to his father-in-law’s house and demanded money for dowry and locked in an altercation with his wife over this matter.

During the altercation Shaheen beat her wife and tolds her that he would not take Labonya to his house if she did not give him dowry and at one stage, Shaheen left the house. Then Labonya set herself on fire by pouring kerosene.

She was first admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery as her condition was deteriorated.

Labonya sucummbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment on Thursday night. Earlier in the day, she gave birth to a stillborn baby at around 8:30 am.

The victim’s father Shah Mostafa Ariful Islam said, “Labonya is my only daughter. Her husband and in-laws put a lot of mental pressure on my daughter for the dowry. She poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.”
