Marking the 75th birthday of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the government on Tuesday began a special daylong drive to administer the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine to 75 lakh people.
The drive started at 9am across the country.
Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) director general Professor Dr ABM Khurshid Alam said, "Only those who have already registered and been waiting for vaccines, will be administered the first dose. And the second dose will be given next month the same date."
In the first two hours, males aged 50 and above, females, and differently abled people will get vaccines on a priority basis, he said.
The day-long vaccination campaign may be extended, if the vaccination drive is hampered in any remote or hard-to-reach areas due to rough weather, the DGHS chief added.
Sheikh Hasina, the eldest among the five children of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, was born at Tungipara in Gopalganj on September 28 in 1947.
On the occasion, discussions, milad and doa mahfils and special prayers will be organized in the capital and across the country, with maintaining health guidelines in view of the coronavirus pandemic.
