Cyclonic Storm ‘Gulab’ now lies over Northwest Bay and adjoining West-central Bay. Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted distant warning signal no two.
The cyclonic storm was centered at about 665 kms southwest of Chattogram port, 630 kms southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 525 kms south of Mongla port and 530 kms south of Payra port at 6.00am on Sunday, said special weather bulletin of Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
It is likely to move in a west-northwesterly direction further.
The maximum sustained wind speed within 54km of the cyclone centre is about 62 kph in gusts or squalls. Besides, the sea will remain very rough near the cyclone centre, the Met Office said.
All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice. They have also been advised not to venture into the deep sea.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal, which intensified as a deep depression on Saturday, will turn into a cyclone by Sunday evening. Cyclone Gulab is likely to cross north Andhra Pradesh and its adjacent south Odisha in the next 12 hours, the IMD said.
