The government has approved export of more 2,520 tonnes of hilsa to India ahead of Durga Puja, one of the biggest religious festivals of the Hindu community.

The Ministry of Commerce on Thursday issued a new circular allowing 63 more exporters to export 40 tonnes of hilsa each to India. None of the exporters will be allowed to export beyond 40 tonnes of hilsa.
With the latest permission, the government has allowed a total of 115 exporters to export 4,600 tonnes of hilsa to India.

On September 20, the ministry concerned gave permission to 50 exporters for exporting 2,080 tonnes of hilsa to India as a token of good gesture ahead of the Durga Puja. The first consignment of hilsa reached India on September 21.

Export of hilsa remained banned since 2012 as the government included the fish in the list of export-restricted item.

In 2019, Bangladesh had given permission for exporting 500 tonnes of hilsa to India on the eve of Durga Puja following a request made by the West Bengal authorities.

In 2020, the government approved export of 1,475 tonnes of hilsa to India.
