The construction of the third terminal at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) Dhaka is progressing rapidly. Its 20 percent of the work has already been completed and concerned people are hopeful to open the terminal by June 2023.
Once the terminal is completed, HSIA will be able to serve 2 crore passengers in a year as against 60 lakhs at this moment. The construction of Taka 21300 crore project started in December 28, 2019 to increase the passengers and cargo handling capacity of the airport in the face of tremendous pressure.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica), the donor partner of the project, is    currently evaluating the proposal for revising the DPP. The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh expects positive response from the Jica authorities in this regard.
After this revision exercise is over the total project cost could be assessed when the maximum portion of the construction work would be completed.
Development projects usually need more money at the end of the implementation process. Considering this factor, the Civil Aviation Authority Bangladesh has decided not to include too many components at the initial stage.
State Minister for Aviation and Tourism Mohammad Mahbub Ali said, "20 percent of the work has already been completed, which is more than our target."Work never stopped during the pandemic, he said.
"We have also arranged PCR test, quarantine and hospital for the workers. The way things are going, I expect to be able to inaugurate the third terminal in June 2023. And if it is introduced, passenger service will increase, Bangladesh will go to a unique height," he added.
Civil Aviation Authorities said the construction work is progressing rapidly. About 5,000 workers are working in the project.
The sources said that the third terminal will have touch of all technological excellence. The 230,000-square-meter airport was designed by renowned architect Rohani Bahrain. He has designed Terminal 3 at Changi Airport in Singapore, ATC Tower Building in Guangzhou, China, Ahmedabad International Airport in India, Islamabad International Airport in Pakistan and other landmark infrastructures in Maldives, Philippines, Cambodia, Brunei, Myanmar and Vietnam.
The new terminal will have 37 aircraft aprons or parking spaces at a time. There will be 12 boarding bridges, 11 body scanners, 16 luggage belts. There will also be an automated immigration system. The third terminal under construction will be fitted with several straight escalators. For those who cannot walk long distances to the airport, this arrangement will be available. There will be baby care-children play area, first-aid, 24-hour health inspection facility with doctors, movie lounge, food court, Wi-Fi facility, and duty free shops are being set up at 14 spots for passenger shopping.
Metro rail will be connected to the third terminal. A separate station will be set up there. Through this, passengers coming to Bangladesh will be able to go to their destination by metro rail without leaving the airport. As a result, the suffering of passengers will come down, the official source said.
